The Tuz Golu Natural Gas Storage Facility in Aksaray Will Become the World’s Largest

With the completion of ongoing expansion works, the Tuz Gölü Natural Gas Storage Facility will be able to store more than 5 billion cubic meters of natural gas. Turkey has made significant investments in the energy sector in recent years. Once completed, the Tuz Gölü Natural Gas Storage Facility will be the largest gas storage in the world.

The Facility is Located 1400 Meters Underground

Construction for the first phase of the facility began in 2011. Salt at a depth of 1400 meters was dissolved with fresh water, creating 12 artificial caverns called “caverns.” These caverns can store 12% of the annual natural gas consumption needs of households.

Aksaray Mayor Evren Dinçer said, “The natural gas extracted from the reserves here is stored in the salt caverns created at the facility in Aksaray. It is then supplied from these storages for future use.”

The Facility’s Capacity Will Increase Fourfold

Expansion works at the facility are ongoing. The facility’s daily network supply capacity of 20 million cubic meters will be increased fourfold. A total of 5.4 billion cubic meters of natural gas will be stored.

Upon completion of the expansion project, the facility will be able to meet 30% of Turkey’s daily natural gas consumption.

Between 2020 and 2021, Adatech provided engineering services to Honeywell, the company supplying field instruments for the BOTAŞ Tuz Gölü Underground Storage facility project.
